LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 Review: Tennis Ace #8831

While I’m not the biggest fan of the LEGO Sports line in the Collectible Minifigures, I’m fully aware I’m not the target audience. So I will gladly accept a Baseball player if it means I’m getting an Elf, Evil Dwarf or Minotaur. But what makes it even better is when the sports figures start pairing up.

“Wham! And there it goes!” Some minifigures train hard all their lives to be good at their chosen sport…and then there’s the Tennis Ace. Where other tennis players might wait for the ball to come to them, he hurls himself toward it with all his strength, swinging his racket around wildly. Instead of carefully aiming the ball, he hits it in any random direction and hopes it lands inside the court’s lines.

It’s not the most traditional way to play, and yet somehow it manages to work. Despite a complete lack of strategy, patience and timing, the Tennis Ace just keeps moving up in the rankings. Maybe it’s luck, maybe it’s well-hidden natural talent and maybe it’s sheer gusto, but whatever it is, it sure does drive the other players crazy when he wins!

The Tennis Ace is the perfect pair to the Tennis Player from series 3. As a figure, there isn’t anything that special about him. The design is basic and doesn’t break any real ground but works very well. The lime green detailing on his polo shirt looks amazing and can easily be used in any City setting. The legs show off white shorts with lime green stripes. The yellow around the knees extends around the sides.

The head is decent with the Tennis Ace grimacing in determination about his match. The white sweatband is a nice touch, but there isn’t much to say about it as a whole. For hair, the Tennis Ace gets Sleepyhead’s but in blond and I really like how this single piece works for heavily stylized hair.

The tennis racquet returns and is cast in navy this time. It’s still a fine piece but very limited in its uses. I see it working as a tennis racquet and as a weapon for your Casey Jones custom. A black display stand is included as well. Sadly, nothing is included to stand in for a ball which is a shame since a single green stud would have done fine.

Getting a second tennis player should be something that makes me angry, but I end up really liking it. I would love for LEGO to release all the Collectible Sports minifigures again with color changes (well, maybe not the Figure Skater) and it looks like they’re planning on doing just that – provided you live in the UK! But if LEGO wants to keep making sports-themed figures, they really need to figure out how to make a ball.

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 Review: Daredevil #8831

There are some lines that just seem like a perfect fit for LEGO that never got made. While I personally would love a Mythology centric set flavored like Age of Mythology, another great idea for a City line would be Destruction Derby! Who wouldn’t want a LEGO Robosaurus?

“Stunts are easy…it’s all the other stuff that takes nerves of steel!” No matter the stunt, no matter the danger, the dashing Daredevil risks it all for each and every spectacular show. Flaming hoops, long-distance canyon jumps and giant stomp-powered launchers are a breeze for this fearless fellow, who always keeps his cool in even the most perilous situations.

It’s the normal, everyday situations that give him pause. Driving a motorcycle at full speed up a ramp and over a dozen garbage trucks is no problem – but buying stamps at the post office? Yikes! He’ll waterski blindfolded through a school of snapping cyber-sharks, but don’t ask him to find the beans at the grocery store, or he’ll run away screaming. It looks like the daring Daredevil has definitely picked the right line of work!

The Daredevil is a perfect inclusion in the Collectible Minifigure line – provided you have a motorcycle for him to ride. Decked out in the most pro-America outfit a LEGO figure has worn since Wonder Woman, there is no mistaking the fact that this is the LEGO version of Evil Knievel. The white jumpsuit, the red and blue details and the cape all point towards a man who should be jumping over dozens of flaming cars.

The paint on this figure is impeccable and manages to avoid all the pitfalls that the Racecar Driver endured thanks to multiple layers that didn’t overlap right. The blue detailing is crisp and gives the impression of extra padding, while the chest is intricately decorated with a circled star sprouting wings. The zipper going down the middle is a great touch. The belt is another amazing piece of paintwork thanks to the red plastic with a blue cover; it definitely takes it above and beyond what I was expecting – much like the Rapper.

Daredevil’s head is double sided. The main head is him mugging for a nonexistent camera. The handlebar mustache is majestic and the eyebrows would give Stephen Colbert a run for his money. The back side is him looking horribly repulsed or terrified. Possibly in realization of what horribly task he will have to do next.

To complete the look of his outfit, Daredevil comes with a white cape that is standard. His helmet is the standard LEGO helmet in white with a blue visor. The top is painted with a red star in a blue circle, making me think Captain America would wear it. When he isn’t wearing his helmet, a reddish blond hairpiece that is the same mold as the Mechanic’s. A display stand is included as well.

What I really love about this figure is how versatile he is. If you want an Evil Knievel riding around in your LEGO city, he’s perfect. If you want some weird quasi-Captain America super hero, he’s great for that too. My only complaint is that he doesn’t come with a motorcycle or a bike of some sort, but that’s a minor one. Now I just need to build a bigger ramp…

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 Review: Swimming Champion #8831

Some Collectible LEGO Figures are great because of how insanely awesome the figure turns out to be while others are astounding solely because of their accessories. While I’m not the biggest fan of LEGO City, I can’t help but love it when I get some new parts and pieces.

“It’s all in the kicking!” When you’re as accomplished a swimmer as the Swimming Champion is, you’ve got to work hard to find newer and bigger challenges for yourself. After all, once you’ve won the gold medal in every competitive swimming event around the world, what else is there to do but start making up your own extreme aquatic sports?

Her quest to find new ways to test her limits has taken the Swimming Champion from iceberg-pushing matches at the North Pole to penguin racing in Antarctica. She’s swum her way across every ocean, lake and sea you can name, and no one’s been able to beat her for time or distance. Some people say she must be part fish, but the Ocean King swears she isn’t…though he’s definitely her number one fan!

The LEGO Swimming Champion is a figure that seems firmly planted in the Sports subline that has been running through the Collectible Minifigures. Like all the figures, her look comes from the paint. Wearing a plain black swimsuit, there isn’t much to the figure’s design. The gray detailing works well to allude to a female figure, but other than that, there isn’t a whole lot going on. Her legs have the same pattern as the Lifeguard, just in black.

With a double-sided head, the Swimming Champion can be presented about to go for a dip or smiling in victory after. The goggles look really good thanks to the truly impeccable paint. Her face is stern but focused, like she’s focusing solely at the task at hand. The other side shows her smiling, but with a tic under her right eye like it is forced. I love the subtle shading used on the lips for both sides.

No hair is included in this figure, but she does come with a new swimming cap cast in black to match her suit. It’s basic but works well and covers her goggle side head perfectly so you don’t see the trap break off. Her gold medal accessory is the one I’m most excited about. A single piece that loops around the neck, it’s so basic but works so well. Sadly, it isn’t a stud but that won’t stop me from using it on some LEGO Sorcerer! She also comes with a black display stand which is boring as always.

There isn’t much new about this figure besides the medal, but I love how it looks. She isn’t a bad figure; in fact she looks great for a swimmer. But in a world like my LEGO world where dinosaurs run free and undead plague the land, a swimmer has no place.

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 Review: Galaxy Patrol Space Marine #8831

In the depths of LEGO Space, a war is brewing. There have been hints of it for years now, between the return of the Blacktron gang and their cybernetic leader. Rumors of UFOs have long been around, but last year they began to arrive on earth. This resulted in the emergence of A.D.U. which defeated the aliens at a terrible cost: the whole in the time space continuum that resulted in Dinosaurs showing up in LEGO Cities across the globe. But the collection of Space warriors have unveiled their newest solider: the Galaxy Patrol.

“No outer-space menace escapes the Galaxy Patrol!” The members of the Galaxy Patrol are an elite squadron of deep-space heroes who are dispatched to the most remote and dangerous sectors of the galaxy to fight cosmic evil wherever it appears. With their heavy-duty space armor and helmet-mounted tactical computers, they’ve got the gear, the training and the attitude to always get the mission done.

To join the Galaxy Patrol, you’ve got to be as tough as space-nails, able to resist the mind-control powers of a Pluuvian Brain-Beast, and capable of holding your breath in vacuum for at least 42 quarkoids. Most recruits wash out, but the ones that are left are the best of the best, ready to defend the universe from interstellar threats of any and every kind – no matter how many eyes, claws and tentacles they may have!

The troop builder of this series, I fully expect the Galaxy Patrol Space Marine to be a challenge to find like the Zombie, Spartan and Legionary from past waves. I just hope everyone will manage to find him because this is an excellent figure. Wearing a navy blue space suit, the level of detail on this figure is incredible. The overlapping plates and intricate seams give the figure the feeling of being well armored. Across his breastplate is his name Luiz, which looks a bit blurry and could be read as Wiz.

The head is double sided. The regular side shows an unshaven man with an intricate eyepiece made of metal. It’s a great look and manages not to get too futuristic allowing it to look at home in many themes. The backside of the head is the “visor” head painted orange and covered in a heads up display. This is exactly what Iron Man should have come with in the Avengers line! It also reveals Luiz actually has two eyes.

The accessories complete the figure though. The new space helmet can actually be held by the chin strap unlike the other new one, but doesn’t have clips for a visor to be placed. The gun has gone around a few times but is now cast in black and manages to look just futuristic enough to really work.

The big addition to the figure is where all his bulk comes from – the armor! This new piece looks amazing. Cast in navy, it seamlessly blends with the figure. The classic Space emblems are painted on both shoulders in silver and look great. On the front and back is a single peg allowing it to be customized a bit, while the back has two handles. When unattached, it almost reminds me of a sentry drone in Portal. A display stand is present as well.

I love this figure. The armor is amazing (and will soon be reused for Power Armor Lex Luthor) and gives this figure something that LEGO really needs: different scales. Adding bulk to the torso really helps distinguish this figure and I hope LEGO introduces more ways to change the classic minifigure. If you love Space, you’ll love this guy.

This figure is an odd one because what I’m about to type will probably be horribly misinterpreted: this figure may have one of the most revealing looks. If these legs came with a LEGO girl, people would be up in arms over it. Instead, it comes with an old man and I’m not sure that makes it any better.

“And here’s a little ditty my ol’ granddad taught me!” Bagpiping runs in the Bagpiper’s blood. His father played the bagpipes, and so did his grandfather, his great-grandfather and their grandfathers before them, all the way back to the day the beloved musical instrument first arrived in Scotland.

He’s played his pipes for weddings, marches, wrestling matches and haggis-eating contests (he’s also played them at chess tournaments and libraries, but for some reason his enthusiastic performances didn’t go over so well then). Other musical styles may come and go, but the Bagpiper knows in his heart that the bagpipes will last forever!

The Bagpiper is just that – an elder Scotsman dressed in the classic clothes and wailing on a set of bagpipes. LEGO seems to have finally realized that people want music accessories, so they’re introducing them. Of course, it is odd that we got a bagpipe before an acoustic guitar.

As a minifigure, I really like the individual pieces this figure comes with. The torso has a very nice suit and vest combination painted on with a dark green tie. It’s very Slytherin and works well. The legs though are something else entirely because they are plaid knee high socks and underwear! I find it very unsettling that such a piece is included, but I guess LEGO will eventually rerelease it for sexy co-ed minifigures or something because that is where it belongs!

The face is very similar to the Ocean King’s with bushy gray and white eyebrows and a stern face. It’s a great head that could work in any LEGO theme so now I’m just waiting for LEGO to actually start reusing these heads!

The accessories really tie this figure together, since without them you just hand a pantsless old man in a suit. The kilt is fabric, similar to the Hula Girl and Figure Skater. The plaid markings work fine and it covers up enough to just to socks are visible. His Tam o’ Shanter cap is another new piece that is printed with more plaid to match his kilt. The set of bagpipes are completely a new piece cast in black and painted with a green pattern. They look really, really good and its designed so he can hold them with ease. The display stand is present as well.

This figure still confuses me. Bagpipes seem like such an odd choice for a LEGO piece, but I’m sure there is someone on the inside vying for these to actually get made. But what weirds me out the most still are the legs, they just feel so wrong. This is a good figure, just very confusing.

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 Review: Ocean King

My love of Greek and Roman mythology isn’t exactly something I’ve hidden, but since it is becoming obvious that LEGO won’t release a full Mythology line (at least not this year), I can’t help but be so excited that LEGO has finally released a god. You can call him Ocean King if you’d like, but there is no denying that this is Poseidon in the plastic!

“Beware the wrath of the lord of the seas – and no splashing in the pool!” Ruler of a vast underwater kingdom, the Ocean King is the master of all the world’s seas. His enchanted trident gives him absolute control of the waves and tides, and woe to any sailor who dares to anger him! Fortunately, he’s easily appeased by rare treats from the surface world, and a cookie or pizza slice (no anchovies, please!) left in just the right tide pool will usually ensure a smooth and tranquil ocean voyage.

Just make sure it’s the proper kind of gift. The Ocean King doesn’t take kindly to people who drop litter into his deep blue domain, and he’s been known to summon raging storms and whirlpools if he’s having a bad day, or even just a mild headache. It might sound like an overreaction, but you try wearing a crown made of pointy gold shells all the time and see how calm you feel!

Maybe you call him Neptune, but it doesn’t really matter because it’s about time LEGO released the merfolk leg piece in a set that isn’t $80. Poseidon’s leg/tail piece originally debuted in the Pirates of the Caribbean line which was a vast improvement over the original mermaid tail, since it keeps the figure at a normal height and allows the figure to stand with relative ease. Cast in sand green, the footprint is about the size of a 2×2 plate. The silver scales painted on reflect nicely.

The torso reminds me a lot of the Surfer since it’s ripped and bare chested. Using brown lines for the muscles, the shirtless look isn’t something we see all that often in a LEGO figure. As an added bonus, the amount of muscles is far less than the Prince of Persia which makes the overall look much, much better.

For a head, Poseidon’s far is stern and weathered. As the brother of Zeus and Hades, it makes sense for him to look worn. The bushy eyebrows look good, but I really love how the figure is frowning in disappointment. To complete his look, Poseidon comes with the same white beard as Sensei Wu that resembles a Fu Manchu mustache.

A new hair/crown piece is included as well. The long, flowing white hair looks great as it is looks a bit untamed. It’s a hairpiece that looks fine both on land and underwater. Permanently attached to it is a crown of five golden conchs. The paint is absolutely perfect, like pretty much every LEGO figure. For a weapon, the golden trident from Atlantis returns and I’m kind of bored of this piece. I would have loved a new trident that was longer, but it is still a fine piece. The barbed hilt and spikes look great. A black display stand is included as well, but you’ll probably forget about it quickly.

Finding this figure is a breeze because nothing feels like the tail section. I love this figure though through and through. The completed look is perfect, but what I really love is that it allows for LEGO mermaids to be cheap again. If you’ve got a little girl, his legs along allow you to make a Little Mermaid with ease. At $3, toys don’t get much better than this.

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 Review: The Bride #8831

Every now and then it seems like LEGO is actively trying to get something perfect, which often results in very similar ideas getting released multiple times in a year. Last year seemed to be all about Christmas Trees, and this year looks like it is shaping up to be brides.

“I do!” The Bride has been busy getting ready for her big day! All of the invitations have been sent out, the floral arrangements are arranged, the banquet is prepared and the facilities are perfect. The cake has just the right number of layers, her gown and veil are as beautiful as she always dreamed they would be, and the groom looks so handsome in his tuxedo and bow tie.

Everything is ready…now the wedding just needs to go off without any problems! What if a guest is allergic to the salad, or somebody drops the cake, or a swarm of bees goes after the flowers, or alien attack-bots crash in the middle of the ceremony? There’s so much that could go wrong today – here’s hoping it all works out!

At the end of last year, LEGO released the Wedding Favor Set which was a great piece that is clearly a cake topper even though they say it isn’t. Then the latest modular building, Town Hall, came with a bride and groom too. Now in series 7 of the Collectible Minifigures, another bride has arrived!

Your basic minifigure, the bride makes use of the sloping white brick to create the lower portion of her white, strapless dress. The paint applications include some ornate details that look perfect. Her hourglass figure is made with some blue paint that breaks up her torso visually, while the gray details make the dress fancier than your normal LEGO dress.

A new head is included as well showing off a wide smile with bright red lipstick. It’s fairly standard, but just different enough to be special. It certainly works better than the pained Cheerleader. Her hair is a brand new piece that swept in the front and folded into a bun in the back. The top has a hole for an accessory to plug in.

Without accessories, you would have no way of knowing this is a bride. Without all the extra glamour, she just looks like a lady in a white dress. The veil is similar to the cape, but with much smaller holes. It feels similar to felt and is help in place with her silver crown. The crown piece has been seen before, but this is the first time I know if it being silver instead of gold. Her other new piece is a bouquet of pink flowers. It is very similar to the classic LEGO flour plant, but can be held. A black display stand is included as well.

When trying to find this figure, she’s one of the two in this wave with a sloped dress piece. The rest of her accessories are a challenge to distinguish, but the Viking Woman’s hair-helmet combo is easy to parse out. This is a figure that I can see being popular for years to come as a cake decoration. As a figure, she’s fine and unique. But what I really like about her is you can take off the veil and be left with a normal looking figure either in a fancy Town setting or watching a medieval joust.

Maybe it’s because I’m currently listening to The Nerdist episode where they talk to Seth Green, but LEGO can call this figure whatever they want and it will always be called Anya to me. Well, except for the head – that is a big of a problem. For those of you not addicted to all things Joss Whedon, go watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

“What kind of noise does a bunny make, anyway?” Hippity-hop! Hippity-hop! Here he comes, hopping down the lane – it’s the happy, jolly Bunny Suit Guy! He’s got the whole outfit: the fuzzy white costume, the tall flappy ears, and even a big orange carrot to carry around. And what made him decide to dress up like a bunny? He has absolutely no idea!

As far as the Bunny Suit Guy knows, he’s always been the Bunny Suit Guy. He’s not entirely sure what a Bunny Suit Guy is or does, but he’s determined to do the best job of it that he possibly can. As far as he can tell, that means hopping around, eating carrots and making people smile. Fortunately, the Bunny Suit Guy is good at all three!

While I love fantasy and historical LEGO figures, there is something delightfully adorable about the costumed LEGO figures. First we got Gorilla Suit Guy, who was amazing, and then we got the Lizard Man (who I still insist is Reptar). Now we get a mall food court staple – the Bunny Suit Guy!

A white minifigure for the most part, there isn’t a whole lot on this figure. The front is painted with a furry pink belly, while a cotton ball tail is painted on his back. The face is smug with a smile that looks like he’s trying to hold something back. Maybe a kid punched him in the balls or the suit is excruciatingly hot. It doesn’t really matter because the face works really well.

To round out the outfit, Bunny Suit Guy comes with a brand new bunny helmet piece. Essentially a white helmet with ears affixed to it, the look works very well. The pink inner ear matches his stomach. For an accessory a carrot is included which is two pieces connected. The black display stand returns.

I think I’m glad LEGO went with the bunny ear helmet so we didn’t get a bunch of LEGO Playboy Bunnies. It is remarkable how basic this figure really is because there isn’t a lot to it. I don’t know if LEGO is expanding into Mall Food Court line, but it doesn’t matter. Just don’t replace the head with a skull, because that is terrifying.

LEGO Collectible Minifigures Series 7 Review: Aztec Warrior

Series 7 of the Collectible LEGO Minifigures line has finally hit shelves and maybe I’ve been drinking too much Kool-Aid, but it is excellent. I mean, what toy line besides LEGO offers so many different kinds of figures (besides Playmobil). So let’s start this series by going back to the Aztecs!

“No, you can’t have our gold! Go find your own!” A mighty soldier of the sun, the Aztec Warrior is one of the fierce Eagle Knights of the legendary Aztec Empire. Protected by his feathered shield and beaked helmet, he battles for the glory of his empire from sunrise to sunset, never stopping for food or rest as long as there are enemies to capture and the sun shines bright in the sky.

And there certainly are plenty of enemies! For some reason, people are always trying to steal the empire’s gold. Sure, it’s pretty and you can make it into some nice, shiny weapons and armor, but the Aztec Warrior doesn’t really get what the big deal is with the stuff. Sometimes he wishes the invaders would only come at night so some other warriors could deal with them instead!

A fine entrant into my Intergalactic Ultimate Fighting Championship Across Space and Time (IUFCAST), the Aztec Warrior looks great. Akin to the Spartan and Tribal Chief, I love the idea of historical LEGO sets that aren’t medieval. Hailing from what is now central Mexico, the Aztec are a subject that many kids learn about in passing while taking Spanish or at least I did.

Like almost all LEGO minifigures, the Aztec Warrior is your basic LEGO figure with special paint to set him apart. The head is stern and serious and covered in green face paint that evokes the imagery of a bird thanks to the wings down the cheeks and the beak where his nose would be.

His bare chest is covered by an elaborate feathered neckpiece of gold and green. In the middle is a golden head – shaped like a LEGO head! I love the little touches like that. A green sash is wrapped around his waist, while a brick red tunic covers his legs that end with gold and green crescents. The figure’s legs are actually yellow, but the paint extends to the sides.

Accessories are where the figure really comes together. Instead of just looking like a revised Islander to fight some pirates, the new headpiece is a massive single brick cast in gold. The headdress is painted with black tips on the feathers and blue eyes, giving the overall look some extra details. Ornate in every way, the headdress reminds me a lot of Achu from the Adventurers Amazon line. The black display stand returns yet again.

His other accessories are the same as the Spartan, Tribal Chief and Roman Legionnaire. The circular shield is cast in gold but painted brick red with the image of a bird that looks a lot like a turkey. His spear is also cast in gold.

I really like this figure from both a historical context and the fact that he just looks so unique. It is really obvious that LEGO knows certain themes just won’t sell as well in today’s markets, so creating these super unique figures is a great way to get people’s imagination going so they can start building sets worthy of these figures.

LEGO Friends Review: Stephanie’s Outdoor Bakery #3930

For any long, long time readers of the site, you might recall a time when I was posting anything and everything on JesterGoblin.com, but two years ago I made the switch and moved almost all of my recipes (the good ones at least) over to my fantasy gaming and cooking website Castles and Cooks. But when LEGO announced their Friends line, I knew I had to buy at least one set when it was revealed the blonde was a baker!

Throw a garden party with Stephanie’s Outdoor Bakery! Bake and create a garden party for the LEGO Friends! The sun is shining and Stephanie is putting the finishing touches on her garden party. Take the fresh-baked cakes out of the oven! Help Stephanie to wash dishes in the sink and set the umbrella garden table! The LEGO Friends are on their way for a girly day in the sunshine.

The Friends line has gotten a lot of attention since it was released last December. Some people claim it is sexist, others think it’s dumb, but I personally think it is great. Growing up, my sister and I would often play together using LEGO. She often made houses and farms, while I made war chariots that harnessed dragons. A line like Friends would have done a lot to give her a sense of having her own LEGO sets in a way the Belville never could thanks to the awkward scales.

The biggest change though is the new minifigure known as a mini-doll. Just a smidge taller than a regular LEGO figure, they’re close enough to the same scale without it being an issue. But the limbs and head aren’t compatible with classic LEGO figures, so there isn’t going to be a whole lot of crossing. That said the hair pieces are completely interchangeable so if you see a new doo you like, it can be used for any LEGO head!

Stephanie is the blonde in the Friends line. Wearing a purple skirt and white tank top, her attire is causal. The pink shoes and blue eyes all add some extra color that really lets you know LEGO isn’t doing this halfheartedly. The addition of a nose on the minifigure is a touch odd after all these years, but the overall look of the figure works. It feels like a LEGO.

Unlike traditional sets, this small build consists more of a multitude of accessories. I don’t know exactly what an outdoor bakery would entail, but this seems to have a decent assortment of parts and pieces in new colors.

The outdoor table is basic with a purple swirled umbrella keeping out the sun. The green and white stool matches it perfectly. A sink is included which is just a few bricks, while the oven makes great use of the hinged door.

For accessories, they are all food based made out of bricks. A frosted brownie is just two bricks, while a drink is a simple glass. The milk carton looks great, along with the cake. What I really love though is the frosted cake. It is only four bricks, but the use of the column piece is absolute genius on LEGO’s end.

As an impulse set for only $6, this was a great way for me to experience the Friends line. The accessories all being built is a very nice touch that more LEGO sets could benefit from. This feels like a good value with a lot of bricks, a great figure and some simple, but genius, designs. If you know a girl who likes LEGO but wants something that isn’t filled with guns, swords or bears trying to eat people, this is a fantastic line to expose them to. There is no doubt in my mind that these are LEGO and they’re no more boring than all the City sets people keep buying.
