Toy Review: Batman the Brave and the Bold Action League – B’Wana Beast & Batman

I consider myself fairly well-versed in DC lore, not nearly to the same extent as Marvel but I know my way around their universe. Afterall, one night at trivia at a local bar, the question was, “Who is the Green Lantern’s secret identity?” At the sametime, my friend and I both yelled, “Which one?” But there are a few fringe characters in DC who I know nothing about, a big one: B’Wana Beast. Well, I shouldn’t say nothing. He was in the episode of Justice League Unlimited and tried to seduce Zatana before hanging out with pigs.
With the power to combine any two animals, B’Wana Beast teams with Batman to make an unusual crime fighting team.
Toy Review: Batman the Brave and the Bold Action League – Batman & Element Man

I’ll be upfront, I don’t know anything about the latest Batman cartoon The Brave and the Bold but I’ve developed a weak spot for the latest craze in toys: the 2 inch hero. It started with Marvel’s Superhero Squad and has continued into the Brave and the Bold Action League. Like their Hasbro Hero kin, Batman’s group of figures are small, limited articulation and highly stylized.
Batman and the shape changing Rex Mason the Element Man pair up to put the hammer down on vile villains. Read the rest of this entry »
Toy Review: Super Hero Squad – Battle for Doom's Castle

I love the fact that this set is called “Battle for Doom’s Castle” instead of Battle for Doctor Doom’s Castle for one simple reason: he isn’t a doctor. Victor von Doom dropped out of college before graduating, making him one of the few characters named Doctor Something who doesn’t have a doctorate.
Iron Man and Doctor Doom face off once again as the armored avenger invades the evil tyrant’s lair! The fate of the world rests in the mighty hands of Iron Man, because Doctor Doom has an evil plot that only the high-flying hero has a chance of stopping! Read the rest of this entry »
Custom: Super Hero Squad Astonishing Emma Frost

Sometimes I wonder about the minds behind Hasbro’s Superhero Squad. It’s a toyline that appeals to children and adult collectors but occasionally there are figures released that boggle the mind. One of them was Emma Frost. Considered the hottest comic book characters ever, Emma doesn’t exactly lend herself to a kid-friendly look. After all, her most iconic look involves a corset, thigh-high boots and underwear. That’s it.
So when Emma was released, the version of her didn’t quite capture the look. They went with her classic appearance instead of her more recent Astonishing one. But for a few years it was fine, since one White Queen is better than none. But recently with the Combat Heroes: the Rise of Cobra, the perfect head for Emma was released… as Cover Girl.
Toy Review: Combat Heroes Singles – The Rise of Cobra
Every toy line is defined by how good of a bad guy the good guys get to fight. Optimus Prime without Megatron is just a truck; the Ninja Turtles without Shredder are some mutant hobos living in a sewer. Where would G.I. Joe be without Cobra? Well if these four figures are any indication, Cobra doesn’t exist.
An awkward amalgam of classic G.I. Joe styled Combat Heroes combined with the modern look of recent film works better for some figures that others. While the toys are tied in with the Rise of Cobra, it doesn’t really seem like Cobra’s arrived at the party yet. Like the four G.I. Joe figures that came out, these figures are all repaints of existing sculpts with one exception.
