Green Lantern Action League Review: Max Charge

without comments

Part of me still can’t believe that I picked up this set simply for a single repaint and two repacks. I don’t even like Green Lantern that much!

In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil’s might,
Beware my power… Green Lantern’s light!

There’s nothing to say about the packaging of these sets that I haven’t said before. It exists, it’s boring and the only kind of sort of maybe redeeming quality is the bubble in the shape of the Lantern symbol.

Hal Jordan is the only repaint in this set, though using the term “repaint” doesn’t feel totally right because what little paint he has is identical to all his other figures – it’s everything that isn’t painted that’s exciting and new.

Cast in translucent bright green plastic, Hal certainly looks unique. Aside from the white eyes and white outline of his Lantern symbol, he’s completely monochromatic but manages to look great for it. The differences in the thickness of the figure’s limbs allow light to pass at through differently and give the figure a surprising range of colors.

There’s not much else to say about this figure – maybe he’s some weird construct made by Kilowog or maybe he’s so overcharged with energy, he’s transformed. Either way, Hal looks really cool.

The first of the two repacks is new recruit drill sergeant Kilowog! A behemoth of a figure, I’m still amazed at just how heavy this figure is. He’s solid plastic and possesses fists that are larger than some Action League figures’ torsos. He’s absolutely massive and looks great as a weird cosmic cross between a pig and Zoidberg.

But there isn’t anything new with Kilowog in his classic Green Lantern uniform (putting him nicely in sync with another three-pack). His figure is identical to his wave 3 release though. Kilowog moves at the shoulders and waist.

The final figure in the pack seems like an odd choice for a re-release – White Lantern Sinestro. Another straight repack from his wave 1 release, Sinestro looks great in his new silver and white suit with black trim. Sure, the body still feels a bit too bulky and when compared to Green Lantern Sinestro, they don’t quite look like the same guy. Maybe becoming a White Lantern buffs you up a bit?

This three pack really comes down to whether or not you want Kilowog and White Lantern Sinestro. For me, Max Charge Hal Jordan was enough of a draw (he’s going to look great with the Human Torch and Iceman). As a three pack though, getting two repacks just feels a touch cheap especially when Mattel could have easily gotten creative and given us all the Hals of the rainbow.
