Toy Review: Batman the Brave and the Bold Action League – Batman & Kanjar Ro

without comments

Batman is an interesting character. He’s one of the biggest superheroes but he doesn’t have any superpowers. Well, that’s not entirely true, he has two and both are presented in this 2-pack. Batman is always crazy prepared and he can breathe in space. It’s quite simple, given enough time, Batman will beat any and everyone.

Batman blasts into space to save a small inhabited planet from the galactic warlord Kanjar Ro.

This Batman variant should be called Space Batman, because he’s sporting a set of wings and is fighting a galactic warlord! But like I said earlier, Batman’s face is completely exposed. But that doesn’t matter because he has jetpack wings. During the episode that this variant was feature in, Batman and Blue Beetle went to a distant planet to help these aliens that were an energy source. The running joke is that Batman was Blue Beetle’s sidekick. Of course, Batman ends up on some other planet that just so happens to have a breathable atmosphere.

Batman’s got his standard blue and gray attire with snazzy blue wings in place of a cape. The packaging on the back shows the wings as being red, but it doesn’t really matter all that much. Besides, Batman tends to favor his color schemes. The sculpt looks good though I think the head is reused from all the other versions of Batman and the arms may be reused too. But the torso and legs seem to be new, and the legs are great. With this style of figure, the legs are often regulated to a basic, dull pose. But Batman’s legs have a nice bow to them that makes them perfect for standing, or flying through the air to kick someone in the face.

Well, they would be perfect for standing if Batman wasn’t so horribly imbalanced. The wings on his back make him back heavy and it’s near impossible to find his perfect point of balance. His articulation is the standard neck, arms and waist but you probably knew that already.

The bad guy in this pack is Kanjar Ro. As I’ve said many times before, my knowledge of the DC Universe isn’t as good as it could be. When I first saw this figure I thought, “he has the same eyes as that guy from Justice League that framed John Stewart!” Turns out it’s the same guy, just in different clothes. Instead of his traditional blue and white jumper, Kanjar Ro is now much more menacing and has almost a samurai vibe to him.

In the episode I saw, Kanjar Ro is trying to enslave or eat (I wasn’t following closely) some other aliens which matches his background as a warlord. He was also responsible for killing the last Blue Beetle. But the design works well for the character. His spikey shoulders and dull browns and grays make him visually distinct from Batman. Throw in his terrifying red eyes, and it’s obvious you’re dealing with a villain.

Kanjar Ro has the same articulation as Batman and they even have similar stances, allowing him to look like he can be either standing or doing a jump kick. But he also suffers from the same inability to ever be balanced. What’s most disappointing is the complete lack of weapons. Kanjar Ro is known for his two pieces of weaponry: the Gamma Gong that can make people immobile and his Energi-Rod which does whatever the story needs it to do.

Both characters look great and I love the poses they selected but I hate the fact that both of them have balance issues. But what seems really weird is that Kanjar Ro didn’t come packaged with Blue Beetle. But I’ve got to hand it to Mattel, they keep releasing characters that for all intents and purposes really shouldn’t have gotten figures in the first few waves.
