Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classics Review: Michelangelo

with 4 comments

Ever since he first got called the “party dude,” Michelangelo often gets blamed for everything that is wrong with each incarnation of the Ninja Turtles. Granted, it often seems like people forget that the turtles are only teenagers (except for Volume 4 of the comics, but even Peter Laird said “Middle-age Mutant Ninja Turtles” didn’t have the same ring to it). Though it does seem weird to me how serious this figure looks.

In addition to sharing the same packaging, all the TMNT Classics turtles share the same body from the neck down too. Aside from the belt, head and the color of the plastic, there isn’t anything setting them apart. What is really amazing is how rarely Playmates does this. You would think four characters who look near identical would allow for an abundance of repaints, but Playmates only did it occasionally.

Mikey’s sculpt is fantastic. The overall look is a great blend of designs drawing inspiration from the original toys, the cartoon, comics and video games. The multi-piece torso looks great and the articulation is amazing. For a full rundown on the figure, check out my Leonardo review. Mike is cast in a darker green than his brothers.

The unique elements of the figure are the head and belt. Mikey’s head is certainly the weirdest one. He’s closed mouth and looks oddly serious. It really doesn’t seem to fit the character and would have been much better suited for Leo or Don. The eyes are glancing upwards, similar to Raph. Luckily, the eyes don’t have any painting issues.

The rest of the color is done through the plastics. The oranges manage to be somewhat muted which works well, especially when you see how vibrant his nunchaku handles are. The emblem on his belt looks good, but the “M” seems to be in a different font from the other turtles. On the back are spots to store his weapons.

Mikey comes with a pair of nunchaku and a manhole cover display stand. The nunchaku took a page out of the NECA TMNT book and include actual metal chains! The handles are neon orange with silver ends. What I really love is that Mikey can hold one between his thumb and fingers.

While Mikey may look way too serious, the rest of this figure is fantastic. The weapons are excellent and the articulation and design really wows me. Having all four of them together reminds me a lot of the TMNT Arcade game. Now I just need someone for them to fight.
