KRE-O Transformers Review: Micro-Changers Sunstorm

Starscream may be the best gravy train for Hasbro. Here’s a character that they can paint over and over again and get away with calling them different characters. Paint him blue, and you’ve got Thundercracker. Paint him purple and he’s Skywarp. It’s almost as absurd as what Playmates has with the Ninja Turtles!

Sunstorm is basically orange Starscream. Depending on the version, he might have some weird powers or just be absolutely insane. But in Kre-O, he’s just a repaint of Skywarp.  Like many Transformers, the Kreon body is perfect for these figures. The blocky design does a perfect job of evoking Gen 1 designs and Sunstorm just looks right.

The bright orange torso has a nice design that looks like a cockpit enough, while the yellow arms barely contrast. His face is angry with furrowed red eyes. Unlike some figures in this line, his additions don’t feel out of place. The wings are a single piece that go around the neck and look great, while translucent purple cannons attach to his arms. The design is rounded out with a black helmet.
Like all Kreons, Sunstorm’s articulation blows your classic LEGO figure out of the water. The neck and wrists are swivel joints, but so is the waist. The shoulders and hips are ball joints which is really great.

But since he’s part of the micro changers line, Sunstorm comes with some extra bricks to build a gun… thingy. Made up of three pieces, the “gun” isn’t awful but isn’t impressive either. It’s better than most kibble on Transformer toys though.

Once dismantled and reassembled, Sunstorm looks foolish from the bottom. The guns switch direction, the wings change by attaching to the waist and a handful of pieces get added to his head and feet. But when you flip him over, there’s no mistaking the fact that he’s and inch and a half long jet! It isn’t perfect, but it is far better than most of these “transformations.”

As a repaint, Sunstorm isn’t the most exciting figure, but he doesn’t have to be. His entire purpose is looking like a recolored Starscream. But the great visuals really go over the top when his conversion method is easy to do and actually works. He really is one of the best examples of what a Kreon can be.
