DC Universe Action League Review: Green Lantern Hal Jordan with Cannon Construct

DC Universe Action League Green Lantern Hal Jordan with Cannon Construct
Out of the blue, the new wave of the DC Universe Action League (which in retrospect is a terrible name when trying to Google these figures) showed up at my local Wal-Mart… and already on clearance. This sixth wave was originally shown off at Toy Fair 2013, but something tells me Mattel wasn’t thrilled about making an entire series dedicated to Flashpoint, only to have DC introduce the New 52.

The new series includes a redesigned packaging that looks fine, but seems a little generic for my liking. In fact, I didn’t even notice it on the shelves at first! The yellow and white design allows you to just gloss over it.

Hal Jordan Returns

The copy on these sets reads like a Silver Age comic cover, and I kind of like the hokey-ness – especially since this line was started by Batman the Brave and the Bold.

Hal Jordan is back again as the Green Lantern in the Action League, which is starting to get annoying. This is the ninth time Hal has been released as a figure! And to make matters worse, he’s identical to his original release! He’s a good figure and represents the best of the Action League style, but he hasn’t been changed.

The sculpt is stylized with oversized fists, round feet and a big chest. There isn’t anything new here that challenges the Action League design. Hal is smug behind his domino mask and chiseled jaw. For articulation, Hal has cut joints at the shoulders, neck and waist.

The paint is decent, but not perfect. Hal’s power ring is a mess with the green spilling onto his fingers. The Green Lantern symbol on the ring is stamped, but his chest looks good. The use of glossy paint on the black gives the figure some extra depth.

This series of the Action League aren’t two-packs in the traditional sense. Each figure comes with a second part, but in the case of Hal Jordan, he comes with a giant Green Lantern construct!

Cannon Construct

IMG_1669The Cannon Construct is a massive piece of translucent green plastic. It is just over 4 inches long! Shaped like a gun an 8 year old boy would doodle (or Rob Liefield would give to Cable), it’s a neat piece. The sculpt of it is well done and it is firing. The burst out of the barrel is kind of odd, but the swoosh at the bottom allows for much needed stability. Hal’s hand fits nicely into it for display.

The only odd thing about the construct is that the shade of green used is darker than the glowing fist or any of the movie line accessories.

As a two-pack, this one is definitely on the disappointing side for anyone who has been collecting the Action League line as long as I have. I would love to get some colorful variants of Hal Jordan finally, but Mattel keeps releasing the same figure over and over again! The construct is a nice touch, but I would have much preferred a smaller construct and an actual second figure.
