Marvel Super Hero Squad Mega Pack Review: Fin Fang Foom & Iron Man

without comments

The last of the Super Hero Squad Mega Packs takes one of Marvel’s biggest alien dragons and turns him into an adorable piece of plastic. Fin Fang Foom rarely gets his own figure in toy lines, but between his Marvel Legends’ BAF and now this one, it’s clear that someone at Hasbro likes the winged, green alien.

Immortal alien dragon from beyond the stars!

A character older than the Fantastic Four, Fin Fang Foom was created before the Marvel Universe was. Originally just a giant green dragon, Foom soon became an alien Makluan that crash landed on Earth and then the Mandarin stole his rings of power from the wreckage. But he’s basically a giant dragon!

Fin Fang Foom is a towering figure that works great as a toy. His body is sculpted with plates and scales that give him some extra texture. His hands and feet are clawed and his spine is covered with spikes. Sure, his face turned the cuteness all the way up and removed his snout but the figure looks fine for it. Foom moves at the shoulders, waist, neck (base and top), tail and wings.

Foom’s wings are ball joints that you have to pop in place. But his wings are absolutely tiny – they’re not much bigger than Annhilus’s! A minor note about the packaging, it’s impossible to take Fin Fang Foom’s wings out without utterly destroying the backdrop which is a nice looking generically Asian background.

The paint on this mega figure is pretty basic with him being a single shade of green while his stomach and face fins are a lighter shade. His claws get a coat of paint along with his antennae. Even his eyes and mouth are painted. He is lacking his pair of orange shorts that he was sometimes drawn with but I think that’s an omission worth omitting since alien dragons don’t seem to need shorts.

The invincible, high-tech super hero!

When I think of who should be fighting a giant cosmic dragon with the nickname of “He Whose Limbs Shatter Mountains and Whose Back Scrapes the Sun” (suddenly calling him Fin Fang Foom seems easy), I wouldn’t think of Iron Man immediately. I mean, he’s the drunkard who keeps fighting Russians!

Tony is wearing his Mark III or V armor that is identical to the suit he got in Iron Man Face Off pack but this is a brand new sculpt, that later got slightly repainted a few times. Iron Man is posed in a crouch and looks like he’s about to deliver a punch to either the ground or a dragon’s head. The armor looks great with some nice sculpted elements, including his widow’s peak. Iron Man moves at the shoulders, waist and neck.

The paint on Tony’s newest suit is well done. It’s in the classic yellow and red color scheme with white eyes that works well as a toy or as a display piece in the armory since the pose is generic enough.

Fin Fang Foom probably isn’t a character that any kid was clamoring for, but his recent inclusion in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance video game series makes him at least slightly more recognizable and he’s started showing up in the Super Hero Squad cartoon too. So while he may not be recognizable, he was one big thing going for him: he’s a giant green dragon! As a toy, he’s big and well done which is always a plus. As for Iron Man, he looks good and getting his classic armor in a non-flight pose is a worthwhile variant.
