Mystery Mates Review: Spaceman Scooby Doo & Zombie

I liked the idea of getting a few odd characters in the 2 inch scale that I’m so enamored with. Being able to have Hellboy, Leonardo, Indiana Jones and Scooby-Doo team up to take down Galactus, Cobra Commander, Megatron and Darth Vader is just too cool to pass up. But there was one area of this scale that’s been lacking: generic monsters!

All franchises are almost always made better by the addition of zombies and the undead (even Sesame Street has vampires), and this Mystery Mates pack includes a basic zombie. Sure, it’s Scooby-Doo themed but I don’t care because he’s a great looking undead!

Dragging his inward pointing feet and having outstretched arms, this isn’t some horrific undead scourge, but more like the generic cartoony kind which works great in this scale. The tattered clothes aren’t too exciting, but look good. The head is somewhat inhuman looking with sagging cheekbones. The hands are incredible yet again – they look terrifyingly good. The zombie moves at the shoulders, allowing him to either grab an unsuspecting victim or just meander about.

The paint isn’t terribly exciting, just shades of green and brown for the most part. The inhuman shade of green looks great and the clothes are perfectly painted. The eyes are sorrowful and terrifying with them being blood red. It’s a great looking zombie.

Like all of the Mystery Mates packs, this one also comes with Scooby-Doo – this time in an astronaut outfit! Sure, it doesn’t make any sense (especially when paired up with a zombie). There isn’t much to say about this figure, it’s Scooby-Doo dressed like an astronaut.

In a lot of ways, it’s very similar to Scuba Scooby. He’s unarticulated, mostly a single color and comes with a clear plastic stand that collapses far too easily. The paint is fine but not terribly exciting since he’s mostly just white.

But like the Beast from the Bottomless Lake, this set isn’t worth getting because of Scooby-Doo; it’s worth getting because of how great the bad guy is. This is a great zombie and with such a low price point, it’s worth picking up if you come across it.
