LEGO Minifigures Series 1 Review: Caveman (8683)

with one comment

It seems like LEGO took the blind packed minifigures to do two things: make a bunch of weird figures someone in the company has been trying to get made and to test the waters with unproven concepts. Now if only they’d take these concepts and flesh them out further.

“Me build, therefore me am!”

This would-be inventor from the prehistoric past is always tinkering with sticks, rocks and the occasional bricks he finds lying around, trying to invent something new. Of course, everything he comes up with has already been invented – he’s a Caveman with a tiny little brain, after all – but that doesn’t stop him from trying. He never gets jokes and usually needs things explained to him with gestures and pictures…and even then, he gets it wrong most of the time.

The Caveman is very strong and always hungry. If something looks like it might be food, he’ll try to take a bite, and if it runs away, he’ll lift his club up above his head and chase it down. Not a lot of people know it, but he’s also an excellent artist who can create incredible landscapes and murals using only the simplest of tools!

This falls into the simple category of “so incredible, why hadn’t LEGO done this before?” It’s a LEGO caveman. What more could you possibly need to know? While it would be horribly inaccurate, I would love some LEGO sets of Cavemen versus Dinosaurs.

Caveman gets most of his look from his paintjob. His hair chest is partially covered by a wrapping of some stripped animal skin held in place by a bone. His legs are covered in tatters; it’s the classic look – like a monochromatic Fred Flintstone. His head features a giant grin and an even larger unibrow, which is thankfully covered up by his mangy head of hair, mustache and beard.

Like all LEGO figures the caveman moves at the legs, shoulders, wrist and neck, but his massive head of hair and beard keep his head from moving. For accessories, Caveman comes with the black display stand. But he also comes with a weapon in the form of a giant brown, spiked club. It’s a brand new weapon and looks great.

The only thing this set is missing would be something like a T-Rex or wooly mammoth, which goes beyond the scope of these blind packs. But I just love this little cave man. Now I just need a cave for him to call home.
