LEGO Minifigures Series 1 Review: Clown (8683)

without comments

When clowns first became circus acts that drew people in, the actors began wearing more exaggerated makeup and accessories so the audience could identify the important features from afar. Of course, the additional face paint made them creepier beyond belief and the very creatures that haunt nightmares.

“Honk honk!”

Everything in life is a joke to the mirthful, merry and mischievous Circus Clown. Whenever things get too dull, up he pops with a banana cream pie to toss, a bottle of seltzer to spray, or a honk of his horn to brighten your day. You can always count on him to appear with a funny gag at just the right moment to lighten the mood.

The Circus Clown is a master of physical comedy, and it’s a good thing, too – aside from a honk of his horn or his big red nose, he never makes a sound, even when doubled-over with laughter at his own silly antics!

This clown is clearly based on “The Hobo” given his freakish smile and unsettling eyes that watch you. Sure, if you look real hard you can see the plain LEGO face smiling but the face paint keeps it all obscured. His giant eyes and mouth are looking great – provided you like the look. But the weirdest thing is the nose – very, very few LEGO figures have had noses and having a bright red one is weird.

The rest of the figure looks like he’d hang out with the Joker. His lime green torso with a giant bow tie and buttons looks great with the light blue suspenders. His legs are different colors with different patches on each one – the only thing missing are oversized shoes! Like all LEGO figures, the clown moves at the legs, neck, shoulders and wrists.

Clown has a red afro that looks good and just absurd enough to work. For accessories he comes with the display stand and a golden horn. The horn is different from the bugles that used to get released and has a black ball on one end. It looks decent but isn’t terribly exciting. A pie, oversized shoes or a unicycle would have worked better.

I hate clowns. For that reason alone, this figure freaks the crap out of me and will be regulated to the bottom of my LEGO box. Look at him, just smiling and waiting for a chance to strike. Can’t sleep, clown will eat me.
