LEGO Minifigures Series 1 Review: Magician (8683)

without comments

A magician doesn’t do tricks; he’s a master of illusions! A trick is something a whore does for money. I need to stop watching so much Arrested Development.

“Hey presto, allez-oop – and it’s gone!”

Appearing out of nowhere with a flourish of his cape and a twirl of his elegant, curly moustache, the mysterious Magician is the ultimate in stylish showmanship. He loves a good audience to appreciate his incredible and sense-defying magic tricks, but watch out – not only is he an amazing performer, but he’s also a talented prankster as well! He’ll confuse, bewilder and amaze with a mix of sleight-of-hand and impossible feats, and the more surprised his audience is, the better.

Whether he’s making a flock of doves fly out of his wand or pulling a giant rabbit out of his magic hat, the Magician is always ready to put on a spectacular show…right up until he vanishes without a trace in a flash of lightning and a puff of smoke!

The Magician is a classically designed LEGO figure that works perfectly in my own deranged world. Need a magic show to be robbed by aliens? He works perfectly. Need a magic-themed bad guy to rob a bank? This guy is your man! Need a figure who looks an awful lot like Mr. Peanut minus the monocle? Just take away his wand!

Wearing a stunning black tuxedo, most of the Magician is left unpainted. His legs, arms and torso are black and he’s wearing white gloves since he’s so classy. His body is dressed up in a tuxedo complete with a red bowtie, a red lapel and matching cummerbund. As always, the paint work is pristine.

The Magician’s face is a cross between being too sinister and just absurd enough. He looks fine on a stage cutting a woman in half or next to a tied up girl on the railroad tracks twisting his mustache menacingly.

The Magician comes with both a black hairpiece that’s parted and a black top hat. Sadly, he doesn’t have a way to hold the top hat so he can’t really do any magic tricks. He also comes with a black wand which is a short rod with both tips painted white. There’s no LEGO rabbit though for him to pull out. A black display stand is also included.

The Magician works well in any kind of civilian setting. Take away his wand and he’s just a well dressed man. Put him next to the railroad tracks and you’ve got a budding super villain. Now that’s versatility!
