LEGO Minifigures Series 1 Review: Forestman (8683)

without comments

The simple fact that the LEGO Collectible Figures are packed with allusions to LEGO’s history makes me love them even more. I mean, new Forestmen figures twenty years later? All I can say is – about time!

“Have no fear, for I am here!”

The brave and fearless Forestman is always arriving just in the nick of time to save the day. Whether he’s swinging down on a vine to rescue a damsel in distress, leaping boldly from the castle battlements to duel an evil duke, or making an incredible trick shot with his bow and arrow to help a friend in danger, he is at all times the very model of a chivalrous hero of legend and yore.

The Forestman loves to make a good first impression and is always practicing his dramatic entrances to get them just right. He’d come to the rescue anyway, of course (it’s just in his nature to right wrongs and fight injustice wherever he finds them), but it’s terribly disappointing for him if no one is around to see him gallantly arrive on the scene for his latest feat of swashbuckling derring-do. He’s only sad for a moment, though, and then it’s off to battle the bad guys and save the day once again!

While the packaging calls him “Forestman” it’s blatantly obvious that this is actually LEGO’s Robin Hood. Wearing a bright green garb with a tan undershirt, this is definitely a case of a LEGO figure looking like how I remember them, not how they actually looked.

Forestman’s front is painted with a fine leather belt and a strap for his quiver. His ruffled collar looks great in darker green. The face is absolutely perfect – if it had a domino mask, he’d be the Green Arrow. The goatee, the raised eyebrow and the mustache all look perfect. But then again, nearly all LEGO paint is perfect. Forestman moves at the standard LEGO joints: cut hips, neck, shoulders and wrists.

There are plenty of accessories for this forest dwelling figure. Forestman comes with a brown quiver, a brown bow, and a green hat pointy hat with a red feather in it. The red feather adds a great burst of color.

Sure, I owned a figure nearly identical to this one two decades ago but I don’t care. This is a gorgeous update to a classic looking figure that belongs in any LEGO Castle world. He’s Robin Hood! The only thing he’s missing is a handful of coins he swiped from the Sheriff.
