LEGO Minifigure Review Series 2: Mariachi (8684)

with one comment

The LEGO Wild West has a need for all kinds of different figures, but I sometimes wonder about the figures LEGO ends up making. Was anyone clamoring for a mariachi?

“Hear the music of the maracas!”

Can you hear that? It may be hard to hear at first, but keep listening and soon you’ll hear the sound of a pair of bright red maracas rattling out a fun and festive tune. That’s how everybody knows that the Maraca Man is on his way!

When the Maraca Man dances through the street shaking his maracas, everyone around him finds themselves cheering up. Where he comes from is a mystery and where he’ll go next is too, but whenever he’s near, people smile, clap, and tap their feet to the beat!

My biggest issue with this figure is the fact that he claims to be a Mariachi. From the neck up, that works fine but from the neck down, that’s a different story. Instead of being dressed up in an elaborate costume, this is a guy in a poncho wearing a sombrero. If he was in a green suit with a frilled collar, he’d be perfect.

It feels like this figure was created and then someone said, “Hold on, you can’t just call the figure Mexican.” So they tossed him some maracas and renamed him. From the neck down, there are no paint applications or anything. He’s just an average LEGO figure with brown legs, a gray torso, tan arm and bare hands. But to give him some color, the figure comes with two miniature capes to wearing that have various geometric patterns on them. Once both are put on the figure, he’s wearing a poncho! It’s a creative way to make the figure stand out from a crowd.

The face screams Freddie Mercury to me with the bushy eyebrows, tooth bearing smile and majestic handlebar mustache. I guess someone was a big fan of LEGO Rock Band. To top the figure off is a giant sombrero that’s about as wide as a headless LEGO figure is tall. It’s bright green and the entire brim is detailed with golden patterns.

For accessories the Mariachi comes with a pair of red maracas that have a little green spike detail on them. He even comes with an extra one in case you lose one. A black 4×3 display stand is also included.

This figure just feels slightly off. He’s not quite a Mariachi and feels like he should be paired up with the Cowboy. But at the end of the day, when I look at this guy all I wonder is why is the lead singer of Queen wearing a poncho?
