LEGO Minifigure Review Series 2: Explorer (8684)

with one comment

Someone at LEGO seems to like the concept of distinguished older gentlemen exploring the world. How else do you explain getting a LEGO figure that looks suspiciously like John Cleese in an explorer outfit?

“By Jove, I do believe I’ve found something new!”

The Explorer travels all over the world in search of new places, animals and plants to discover and study. The more exotic and difficult something is to find, the better as far as he’s concerned!

Whenever he finds something unusual, he makes sure to draw it and write it down in his explorer’s journal, which he’s secretly hoping to turn into a best-selling book some day. The world is just full of exciting new surprises when you’re an Explorer!

The Explorer isn’t all that new to me since all of his accessories were wildly popular back when I was avidly devouring LEGO during the totally-not-Indiana-Jones line of “Adventurers.” But like many LEGO figures, just because they aren’t new to me doesn’t mean they aren’t new to someone else!

The Explorer is wearing the classic attire of a khaki suit with pockets on the legs and chest, a belt strapped across and a silver canteen fastened in place. His neck is covered by a dashing red scarf which makes me think it’s to cover up the flannel shirt for him to reveal that he wanted to be a lumberjack.

The face is delightfully over the top with a bushy mustache that would make a walrus jealous and covers about a third of his head. His right eye is squinting while his left is holding a monocle firmly in place.

For accessories, the Explorer is ready to look at things, but not much else. His white bucket looking safari hat is great and has a peg on the top. He comes equipped with a pair of dark gray binoculars and an oversized magnifying glass. The magnifying glass actually works too! Well, sort of – enough to make it fun in the LEGO world. He also comes with the standard display stand that just feels boring in black.

Even though I’ve owned figures nearly identical to this one in my past, I still find this figure endlessly amusing. Sure, the monocle and striking resemblance to a Monty Python cast member don’t hurt at all either. But this guy looks great and should be leading a safari through the savannah or examining an ex-parrot in a pet shop.
