LEGO Minifigure Series 3 Review: Fisherman (8803)

without comments

The best LEGO figures are the ones you never knew you wanted. Or ever thought would be made. Or really have no reason for existing. For example: the fisherman.

“That reminds me of the time…”

The Fisherman has sailed on every ocean, river, lake and stream in the world, and he has a story for each one. He can tell you all about the time he caught an entire school of flying fish with a butterfly net, was shipwrecked by a typhoon and escaped with the help of a friendly whale, or hooked a giant squid with nothing more than a fishing rod and an old rubber boot for bait.

Of course, no one believes these obvious tall tales, which makes the Fisherman a little cranky, because every single one of them is absolutely true. It’s not his fault that he had to throw his catch back because it wasn’t giant squid season yet, or that the batteries in his camera died that time he caught a sea serpent off the coast of Greenland. One day he’ll bring back proof, and then everyone will finally believe his stories!

This figure is an old man wearing orange hip-waders. That’s it. But that’s entirely why I love him. With legs the color of macaroni and cheese and a light blue striped sweater, this old man looks delightfully garish. His head is covered with a navy blue beanie that makes me think he’s balding.

The beard is new to me. Instead of being a long one like the Wizards, it’s shorted and a glimmer of a smile can be made out from under it. It will be a fantastic new beard for LEGO Santa next year too! With the beard off, the figure’s face is an older man with sparkling eyes, bushy gray eyebrows and the beginning of a majestic gray beard. He’s also got an open mouth smile that lets you know he’s having the time of his life.

For accessories, this noble fisherman comes with the generic black 4×3 display stand (I’m really starting to wish these came in different colors). He also comes with a black LEGO fishing pole, a short black string to thread through it and a green LEGO fish on the end. The fishing pole looks great but the string feels a touch too short.

This figure is just an old man fishing and enjoying himself and that in and of itself, makes me smile.
