LEGO Minifigure Series 4 Soccer Player Review (8804)

without comments

LEGO had a soccer theme in the early 2000s that never seemed to make a lot of sense to me. It was kind of like Foosball but with LEGO figures. But after how popular the World Cup has become, it actually makes sense for LEGO to tackle the subject again.

“Follow my lead!”

The Soccer Player has led the Brick Kickers team to many victories, and the other players all respect his strategy and skill on the field. He’s a fast runner, an accurate kicker, and he’s knocked so many soccer balls into the goal with his head that the fans joke that it’s made of steel.

He may not win every game, but the Soccer Player always does his best and plays with a smile. It’s earned him a reputation as both a good sportsman and a good sport who’s almost as happy with a hard-earned second place as he is with a first-place trophy!

The Soccer Player (or Football for all of you non-Americans) isn’t terribly new or exciting as a minifigure. A lot of him just feels like stuff we’ve seen before. His hair is the same as the Surfer and Skater but in light brown. The long, borderline emo hair looks good though. The face is scruffy with a toothy grin that seems near identical to the Surfer’s face too.

What sets him apart though is the absurd amount of paint applications on his legs and body. The front of the jersey is emblazoned with an Octan logo front and center, the LEGO brick clothing brand in gold on his breast and a gold shield with a falcon’s head. The blue and white striping is perfectly done and also is applied to his back. He’s like an infinitely better version of the Racecar Driver.

His white legs are painted to give the look of shorts like the Weightlifter. Yellow stripes show off his knees while the LEGO brick and crest show up again on each leg.

LEGO missed a perfectly opportunity to release a LEGO ball (maybe bring back the soccer ball of old even) but instead only gave the Soccer Player a black display stand and a rather ornate trophy. Rounding out the set that began with the gold for the Karate Master and bronze for the Sumo Wrestler, this guy gets the silver! The stand is made up of a LEGO fez and a black stud.

This isn’t a super exciting LEGO figure to me but anything that isn’t a monster or medieval. He’s an excellently made figure with top notch paint applications and the head would be perfect for some cocky, egotistical knight. I just really wish LEGO had made him a soccer ball.
