LEGO Minifigure Series 4 Crazy Scientist Review (8804)

without comments

Given the sabbatical I took from LEGO from around a decade, I missed out on a lot of weird stuff. Like the Agents and Agents 2.0 lines, which seem to be the source of this figure. But even if he isn’t new to you, this is one awesome scientist.

“Ah hah hah hah! They called me mad at the university…and they were right!”

The Crazy Scientist really loves mad science. He’s got all the right equipment: a spooky old laboratory, shelves of beakers and tubes full of bubbling liquids, and even one of those antenna things with the little bolts of lightning that go up and down. He’s still looking for just the right creepy assistant, but he’s sure that one will answer his ad soon.

On the other hand, there are the experiments. The Monster was one, but just like the rest, it didn’t turn out quite as planned. It was supposed to be all evil and scary, but instead it turned out friendly and nice. No matter how hard he may try, the Crazy Scientist can’t seem to create anything really bad. He just doesn’t know where he’s going wrong, and it’s driving him crazy!

Yep, this is the creator of the Monster! But even without that bit of exposition, the Mad (sorry, Crazy) Scientist is a fantastic LEGO figure that hits all the right notes. Wearing a splatter lab jacket that’s covered in god-knows-what, there isn’t much on the figure for paint. The legs are black with a white waist that helps make the jacket seem longer.

The face is in an open mouth smile with the eyes hidden behind large, maroon goggles. His bushy gray eyebrows blend in with his over the top hair style. The hair piece isn’t a new LEGO, but looks delightfully absurd. The spikes in the back look like someone who just doesn’t care about their look (instead of being someone who wants everyone to know how much he doesn’t care about how his looks when it’s perfectly styled to look absurd). Oddly, the hair is kind of squishy too.

The black display stand is included as always, but the Scientist’s single other accessory is amazing. It’s nothing more than conical flask but the plastic is two-toned between bright green and clear so it looks like it is filled. Combined with the bubbles in the middle, it’s a fantastic look potion. Plus the top and the bottom are LEGO pegs!

A mad scientist is a fantastic idea for a LEGO figure. Need someone to raise the dead or make contact with aliens? Looking for a reason to justify a Spartan running through your city? It all works just fine when some crazy scientist is building contraptions and changing the world.
