Random Toy Review: Perpetual Kid Finger Puppet

with one comment

Growing up there was one thing I absolutely hated: going to the dentist. Even the allure of toys in that mystery drawer afterwards wasn’t enough for me to endure those wretched trips. But after years of getting bit by me or me refusing to open my mouth, my dentist finally got revenge on me by making a simple decree when I was young: he would stop filling in my cavities in baby teeth. I quickly learned my lesson.

A decade later when I ended up getting my wisdom teeth out, I vaguely remember a discussion with my surgeon about how he did what he did because he loved hurting kids. I said he was twisted and he just laughed. I woke up later with my face covered in bruises and an inability to speak. But in my infinite wisdom, I tried to convince my mom that I should go to Toys “R” Us.

She realized that I was in no position to go anywhere and said she would take me if I could walk. Still drugged out of my mind, I jumped up and quickly introduced myself to the cold, tile floor.

I didn’t get to go to Toys “R” Us.

But back to the toy I’ve barely mentioned. The weirdest thing about these little finger puppets is that I don’t really know where they come from. I mean, someone must manufacture them because they’re a common sight on children. So after acquiring many oddities from Perpetual Kid over the years as presents, last year my mom threw this little guy in my stocking at Christmas.

Beak Monster looks like a cross between an owl and Mr. Fantastic that’s been designed by Dr. Seuss and Tim Burton at the same time. His feathered, yellow body contrasts horribly with his bright purple, and oddly human, arms. His bulging eyes are topped with red antennae while his orange, toothed beaked can open.

The whole thing is unarticulated but is bendy as can be. Amazingly, he manages to fit on my adult fingers but what I love the most is how versatile this guy is. Equal parts nostalgia and weirdness make me adore this guy as he lives on my desk at work.

Is this some ground breaking toy that will change your life? Not at all, but he is an excellent little figure that brings back a flood of memories even if he is brand new to me. Now I just need to find out where they all come from.
