LEGO Harry Potter Review: The Forbidden Forest #4865

I’m kind of kicking myself right now because one of the big reasons I bought Hogwarts Castle was because it came with a little LEGO Lord Voldemort – then LEGO releases this tiny set and includes him again! Oh well, I’m sure I’ll find some use for him.

In Forbidden Forest, Lord Voldemort and his followers have captured Hagrid and tied him to a tree. When Harry Potter enters the Forbidden Forest to face his destiny, Lord Voldemort attacks. Will Lord Voldemort defeat Harry Potter once and for all? Will Narcissa Malfoy betray the Dark Lord?

This copy must have been written by a Death Eater for one simple reason: it refers to Lord Voldemort as the Dark Lord and not You-Know-Who or He-who-must-not-be-named.

Much like the Captain’s Cabin, this LEGO set is slightly larger than the normal impulse set and retails for $12. But it does come with three figures and some solid set dressing. First up is the boy who lived – Harry Potter! Harry is wearing his school uniform and this figure is identical to the one we’ve gotten a handful of times already. His face is still double sided and he comes with a brown wand.

One minor nitpick about Harry is that he shouldn’t be in his school uniform! He was on the run during his seventh year at Hogwarts so there’s no reason for him to be wearing his uniform!

Hagrid is another straight repack from Hagrid’s Hut. A new size of LEGO figure, Hagrid towers over other figures and stands two inches tall. His hollow brown body is painted to show off different layers of clothing in the front, while his massive beard hides the fact that underneath it he has just a regular sized LEGO head! Oddly, Hagrid has no accessories – not even his umbrella!

Lord Voldemort makes his appearance again and is another repack, this time from Hogwarts Castle. But unlike Harry and Hagrid, Voldemort can easily exist in other LEGO worlds as a skeletal mage. His black robes show a hint of green highlighting, while his boney white head looks like a skull with sunken black eyes. Sure, the eyes are still the wrong color but details look good. He’s wearing a black cape.

But the continuity of this set doesn’t make any sense. His wand is white – the same as the one in Hogwarts Castle, but at this point he was wielding the Elder Wand which Dumbledore had in that same set! He also comes with his green snake, Nagini.

The only new figure in the set is Narcissa Malfoy, the mother of Draco and wife of Lucius. Narcissa is wearing a black dress with gray details and silver clasps. The clothing looks great and subtly evokes imagery of snakes around the collar. Her face is two-sided and shows some age with one looking enraged while the other looks calm, but weary.

Her hair is the same as the Hula Dancer’s, but cast in brown and with highlights to give the impression of someone desperately clinging to her youth. Her wand is a simple black one.

The actual build of the set is pretty basic since it’s little more than some ground and a large, dark tree in the Forbidden Forest. The tree is made up of dark green leaves, dark brown and black pieces. It gives it a much spookier feel than the flowering tree of the Medieval Market. A single spider crawls through the branches.

On the ground are a single mushroom and a magical trap made of blue flame. Hermione was the witch known for casting bluebell flames, but it wouldn’t be unheard of that Narcissa knew the same spell. On the other side of the tree is a simple lever which can be used to fling a figure from the base.

Sure, there are some major continuity errors in this set based on the books and the fact that Narcissa is the only new figure isn’t great for people who buy everything. But this is a good, cheap set that gets you both Harry and Voldemort which hasn’t happened since the Graveyard Duel set that came out six years ago! Plus given the price of LEGO figures, getting four of them and a decent assortment of bricks for only $12 makes this set a steal for any LEGO or Harry Potter fan.
