Avengers Super Hero Squad Review: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

with one comment

My biggest concern with the Avengers movie was what Hasbro would do with the toys. Providing a toy company with all the big names they would possible want could have meant disaster. But instead of turning the Avengers Super Hero Squad line into a bunch of rehashes of Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man and Thor, they actually showed some restraint. In fact, if you buy all three of the 3-packs, you get the entire cast! Read the rest of this entry »

Avengers Super Hero Squad Review: Secret Invasion

with one comment

With a name like Secret Invasion, it’s hard not to be impressed with Hasbro’s commitment to nods at the comics in this toy line originally intended for three year olds. But nods to the comics have been a constant trend in this line. How else do you explain getting Captain America Punisher or a Secret Wars four-pack? Read the rest of this entry »

Avengers Super Hero Squad Review: Attack of Loki

It’s been a long time since the toy gods have smiled down on me. I think the last time it happened was when I stumbled across a full set of the Wal-Mart Marvel Legends Giant-Man series. But over the weekend, I discovered the full set of the Avengers Super Hero Squad packs at Newbury Comics in Harvard Square! Read the rest of this entry »

Avengers Super Hero Squad Review: Battle at the Red Skull’s Lair

With the Captain America marketing blitz in full force, the first Avenger has finally gotten his own three-pack in the Avengers Super Hero Squad line. Amazingly, this set goes pure, classic Cap by releasing three figures that couldn’t possibly make more sense together. Read the rest of this entry »

Avengers Super Hero Squad Review: Battle in the Frozen Land

All of these Avengers Thor Super Hero Squad packs make me think of how Collector’s Pack #4 really should be part of the Thor line. I mean, it gave you a frost giant, three of the Avengers, Loki and Enchantress! Read the rest of this entry »

Avengers Super Hero Squad Review: Raid on Enemy Headquarters

without comments

By packing the Super Hero Squad movie packs under the Avengers banner, Marvel doesn’t have to worry about getting too much stuff on the shelves at once like they did when Iron Man and Hulk kept bumping heads in the toy aisle. But they’ve got to be careful trying to sell people on Captain America when Thor is after the spotlight. Read the rest of this entry »

Avengers Super Hero Squad Review: Asgardian Smash

with one comment

Since the Avengers movie will tie in Hulk, Thor, Iron Man and Captain America into a single continuity, it makes sense for some cross referencing to happen in the toy lines as well. But instead of doing fun things like expanding the offerings, Hasbro is using it as an excuse to repackage old figures. Read the rest of this entry »

Avengers Super Hero Squad Review: War Mechs

with one comment

This three-pack makes absolutely no sense. It is three repaints; one of them is a new character who nobody has been clamoring for. But Iron Man seems to constantly be adding new things to his armory, but when the changes are so trivial it isn’t really worth it. Read the rest of this entry »

Avengers Super Hero Squad Review: Battle for Asgard’s Vault

As Marvel and Hasbro started getting ready for the release of the upcoming Thor movie, they’re taking a different route with the Super Hero Squad three-packs. Instead of making lines for each of the different Avengers, Hasbro is releasing mixed cases that include Iron Man, Thor and Captain America – each with their own packaging!
