Spider-Man Super Hero Squad Review: Green Goblin & New Goblin

without comments

The Spider-Man Super Hero Squad line had a tough path to tread. With only a singular hero that meant a lot of packs would get Spider-Man but this is the first one to drop the titular hero and included a father and son pair instead! Sure, it doesn’t make any sense from a continuity standpoint, but getting two goblins over another Spider-Man isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Spider-Man Super Hero Squad Review: Mysterio & Spider-Man

without comments

The Spider-Man franchise collapsed under its own weight in the third installment much in the same way that X-Men 3: The Last Stand did. Both films suffered from stuffing too many characters in a single movie and the overall experience suffered because of it. But there was one villain that the fans were hoping would be included in Spider-Man in a throwaway role much in the same way that Scarecrow was used in the Dark Knight.

Toy Story 3 Buddy Pack Review: Sheriff Woody & Trixie the Triceratops

without comments

I knew I had to get the Buzz & Twitch Toy Story 3 Buddy Pack when I first saw it just based on the fact that it was a space ranger and a mutant mantis. But I also knew I needed to get a figure of Sheriff Woody for my Toy Story collection. So while browsing the pegs, I passed on several different pairings of Woody and Buzz since I’m trying to keep duplicates to a minimum. But then I saw a set that I liked: Woody and Trixie the triceratops!

B.P.R.D. Buddies Review: Hellboy "Red" with Big Baby & Abe Sapien

without comments

It used to be that toy collectors focused on one of two scales: 6 inch and 3 3/4ths. But as the cost of oil increased, toys began to jump in price and decrease in size. The new standard is around 4 inches tall, but for every mid range toy you’ve got either 12 inch giants, 6 inch specialty figures and the ever growing segment that has become my person favorite: the 2.5 inch figure. Over the years this size of figure has come and gone with popularity, the M.U.S.C.L.E. Men of the 80s, the Z-Bots and Monsters in my Pockets in the 90s and then the Playskool Galactic Heroes in the early 2000s.

But then something odd happened: the figure stopped being made for kids. Sure, stuff like Batman the Brave and the Bold Action League and most of the Super Hero Squad were intended for kids, but the first two waves of the Transformers Robot Heroes were based on a movie that came out in 1985! It’s the same with the G.I. Joe Combat Heroes and the first wave of the Indiana Jones Adventure Heroes. These were toys designed for kids based off properties for adults who were nostalgic. And then other companies decided to play ball and Mezco threw their hat into the tiny toy market with the adorable B.P.R.D. Buddies!

Toy Story 3 Buddy Pack Review: Buzz Lightyear & Twitch

without comments

You’d think, given my hobbies, that I would absolutely adore Toy Story. I mean, I kind of collect these chunks of plastic. I remember seeing the first Toy Story when it came out and I was 10, and then I vaguely recall seeing Toy Story 2 on VHS when it first came out. So in preparation for the third installment coming out this summer, I’ve added both to my Netflix queue. But once the Toy Story 3 Buddy Packs started coming out, I was told to get at least a few of them. So like my rules concerning Galactic Heroes, I will track down figures based on the first movie or just happen to look really cool.

Spider-Man Super Hero Squad Review: Doc Ock & Spider-Man

without comments

Nowadays, if you ask someone who is Spider-Man’s arch nemesis the answer is always Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin. But that wasn’t always the case. For the first few years of publication, Doc Ock was the big bad that constantly fought Spidey. When you think about, Green Goblin is one of the odd-ones-out in Spidey’s rogue gallery since he’s one of the few not based off an animal motif.

Spider-Man 3 Super Hero Squad Review: Sandman & Black Costume Spider-Man

without comments

When I first heard that Sandman was going to be one of the bad guys in Spider-Man 3, I was a little disappointed. After all, he is the guy that Spider-Man first beat by vacuuming him up. Then it was teased that Harry would become some sort of goblin. Finally, the whole black costume got leaked and the reveal that Venom was also in it suddenly made Sandman more interesting. In the comics, Venom ended up fighting with Sandman, took a bite out of him and that caused him to dissolve for a few years. So it could have been an interesting battle where Sandman has a change of heart and defends Spider-Man from Venom and ends up dying. Instead he flew away as a cloud of sand.

Spider-Man 3 Super Hero Squad – Unmasked Spider-Man & New Goblin

without comments

It’s amazing how often super heroes end up having their costumes destroyed but one of them takes the cake: Spider-Man. While Reed Richards has given many heroes costumes made of unstable molecules that prevent them from ripping, Spider-Man got the short end of the stick. It seems like no matter where or who he fights, he ends up losing a bootie or having to do some major patching work. But maybe that’s just another power he got from the spider that bit him, the ability to be able to sow really, really well.

Marvel Super Hero Squad Review – Spider-Man & Venom

without comments

It’s interesting how your first exposure of a character can drastically shape how you see them. Of all the characters I have a skewed view of, this one may be the oddest: Spider-Man. I started reading my cousin’s old comics in the late 80s. Random assorted back issues so when I was first introduced to Spider-Man he was in the black costume. It wasn’t for several years that I learned he was originally blue and red. But I also remember when Venom first showed up. Of course, over the years I quickly grew tired of the symbiotes after the events of Maximum Carnage. So when Venom was announced as being one of the bad guys in Spider-Man 3, I was equal parts reluctant and excited. Of course, once I saw the movie I was less than thrilled with the outcome.

Marvel Super Hero Squad Review: Spider-Man & Green Goblin

without comments

It’s funny that there was once a time when there wasn’t an overabundance of Spider-Man in the Super Hero Squad. In fact, there was a time where there weren’t any Spider-Men!  But once Spider-Man 3 was about to debut in theaters the reason why Spider-Man wasn’t in the Super Hero Squad was made apparent: he was getting his own line!
