Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles Review: Dragon Chopper with Dragon Fang Foot Soldier

with one comment

I’ve got to hand it to Playmates; I think they’ve learned some valuable lessons about how to package figures are vehicles together. If any character should get released multiple times with minor variations, it’s a troop builder. Raphael with a helmet and gloves may not be super exciting, but taking a classic Foot Soldier and making a Dragon Fang Foot Soldier? I don’t care if he never appears in the show, that is awesome. Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles Review: Master Splinter

with one comment

There has never been a good Splinter toy ever made. This sounds harsh, but between the bucktoothed original, the scarecrow impersonator in Next Mutation and the brittle 2k3 figure, Splinter usually gets the short end of the stick. Read the rest of this entry »

Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles Review: Kraang

with 2 comments

Nickelodeon is clearly messing with people just to see how they will react to this. In the original comics, the Utroms were an alien race that looked suspiciously like a brain and accidentally created the ooze that made the turtles. In the original cartoon, Krang was an extra-dimensional lizard monster that got severed from his body and ended up looking like a brain in the most 80s robot suit ever. Now with the newest Nickelodeon cartoon, the Kraang are a race of evil brain shaped aliens! Read the rest of this entry »

Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles Review: Foot Soldier

without comments

Troop builders are an interesting prospect in the toy world. When done well, they are excellent ways to get people to buy the same toy multiple times. But the bane of a troop builder is being short packed. And right now, the Foot Soldier is really suffering from it because he’s packed only once or twice depending on the case assortment! Which would explain why Toys “R” Us is out of stock, because you need more than one, right? Read the rest of this entry »

Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles Review: April O’Neil

without comments

With the exception of The Next Mutation, all the Turtles toy lines have included their human compatriot – April O’Neil! Whether she’s a lab technician or a news reporter, April is there to give the guys some level of access to the outside world. When you really think about it, four home schooled boys are going to have some serious social issues. Read the rest of this entry »

Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles Review: Raphael

with one comment

When I was first introduced to the Ninja Turtles, Leonardo was always my favorite and Raphael was my least favorite. Looking back on it though, I finally realized they are two sides of the same coin. Raphael is fueled by passion and impulse while Leonardo is controlled and calculating. Read the rest of this entry »

Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles Review: Donatello

with one comment

In the Turtles mythos, Leonardo has always been well-defined as the leader, while Raphael was the hothead and Michelangelo was the goofball. Donatello though seemed to fluctuate between technology driven scientist, cool and geeky and borderline sociopath. How else do you explain him keeping the remains of Baxter Stockman hidden in the sewers? I’m hoping the new Nickelodeon series doesn’t go that dark. Read the rest of this entry »

Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles Review: Michelangelo

Playmates continues to impress me with their new Nickelodeon TMNT line. It shouldn’t be surprising that they know how to make excellent Turtles; they have been doing it for almost 25 years now! But with each version of the Turtles making changes, this line is the first time they are different sizes. Read the rest of this entry »

Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles Review: The Shredder

with 4 comments

Heroes are often defined best by their villains. Batman wouldn’t be nearly as interesting if Joker wasn’t running around, and Spider-Man’s elaborate rogue gallery has shaped him. But the Ninja Turtles are odd because when they first debuted, they didn’t have a set group of villains to fight. In fact, The Shredder was killed off in issue #1. But the cartoon needed a big bad and Shredder has been a constant piece of the TMNT mythos ever since. Read the rest of this entry »

Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles Review: Leonardo

with one comment

It’s been a crazy few weeks for me as a toy collector. At the end of June, I was legitimately worried about what I was going to review because I knew I only had three LEGO Lord of the Rings sets left – that was it in my stockpile! After that, I didn’t have a clue of where to go. But then my favorite characters of all time showed up to rescue me: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Like most kids born in the mid 80s, I was addicted to the turtles. But unlike most kids, I never outgrew them. Once I was able to read, my cousin exposed me to the dark and gritty world of the TMNT comics, which in turn lead me to reading the Archie series on the spinner rack at Shop ‘n Save. And I stuck with them through every Saturday morning scarfing down bowl after bowl of Ninja Turtles Cereal that came with those awesome bowls or cracking open those disgustingly sweet Turtles Pies (which I still don’t know how m mom ever allowed me to eat something that green and cream filled).
